Roundtable Recap: February 19 – Bootstrapping A Billion Dollar Unicorn With A Paycheck

During today’s roundtable, we celebrated the launches of my books, Bootstrapping With A Paycheck and Billion Dollar Unicorns, with Girish Navani, CEO of eClinicalWorks, who has bootstrapped a billion dollar Unicorn with a paycheck. Girish didn’t quit his job for two years, while he tested and validated his original product and customer base. Today, 16 years later, he has built a $300 million revenue company that is still 100% bootstrapped, private, and has no desire to sell out or go for an IPO.

As for the pitches, first up, Bhartesh Chhibbar from New Delhi, India, pitched HeyBiz, an app for SMBs in India to enable consumers to call and talk to them. How to scale the company fast enough to attract investors is TBD.

Roundtable Recap: February 12 – Billion Dollar Unicorns with Ross Mason, Founder of Mulesoft

During today’s roundtable, we celebrated the launch of my new book, Billion Dollar Unicorns, with Ross Mason, founder of Mulesoft, as our guest. Ross has built a terrific commercial Open Source company that is scaling at Unicorn rates, with freemium conversion rates in the 5-6% range. Ross discusses how he got the company off the ground, and built a product strategy that makes such high conversion rates possible. You can also read my Entrepreneur Journeys interview with Ross. We first encountered Mulesoft back in 2008, and covered them in March 2009.

As for the pitches, first up, Denise Terry from San Francisco, CA, pitched EmbraceHer Health, a mobile app for powering women to get control over their reproductive health and other feminine health issues. Denise has built up a nice following already for the app, and a small amount of revenue. We discussed her scaling and funding strategy today.
