Roundtable Recap: April 16 – Billion Dollar Unicorns with Fred Luddy, Founder of ServiceNow

Posted on Thursday, Apr 16th 2015

During today’s roundtable, we celebrated the launch of my book, Billion Dollar Unicorns, with Fred Luddy, Founder and Chief Product Officer of ServiceNow, one of the most successful companies in the history of enterprise software. The company, founded in 2003, is valued at over $12 billion in the public market today. It was a truly wonderful discussion, marked with Fred’s warmth, humility and wit: “We hire people with a lot of experience. We ask them to bring their knowledge, and leave their baggage!”

SHURUA(R)T
As for the pitches, first up, Gaurav Tiwari from Varanasi, India, pitched SHURUA(R)T, a portal where young artists in training in India can sell their original art for $150 to folks in the United States. I suggested a somewhat different strategy than what Gaurav was contemplating.

ExTravelMoney.com
Next, George Azchariah from Cochin, India, pitched ExTravelMoney.com, a foreign exchange portal where Indian travelers can access foreign exchange at attractive prices. My hunch is that this would find better traction with travel agencies and corporates.

Roundtable Recap: April 9 – Billion Dollar Unicorns with Gaurav Dhillon, Founder of Informatica and SnapLogic

Posted on Thursday, Apr 9th 2015

During today’s roundtable we celebrated the launch of my book, Billion Dollar Unicorns, with Gaurav Dhillon, Founder, Chairman and CEO, SnapLogic, and also founder of Informatica. Gaurav discussed his process of sniffing out high potential market opportunities in large horizontal enterprise software categories. Both Informatica and SnapLogic are Unicorns, and it is rare to have an entrepreneur who can do two of these in a row.

BlingLane
As for the pitches, first up, Saurabh Gandhi from Haryana, India, pitched BlingLane, a jewelry e-commerce play based in India. Saurabh wants to build an affordable luxury brand for middle class women in India who want to buy high quality costume jewelry.

Campus Globe
Next, Harshvardhan Tiwari from Jalandhar, India, pitched Campus Globe, a portal for students, corporations, and universities in India to interact, close loops for job / internship recruitment, and offer discounts of products. This project needs a much clearer positioning.
