CaratLane’s Sparkling Success Story

According to a recent report, the Indian gem and jewelry market is expected to grow at 21% CAGR from $37.25 billion in 2022 to reach $144.4 billion by 2029. Traditionally, the Indian jewelry market was dominated by family-owned stores that catered to regional markets. Over the past few years, though, there has been a significant infusion of technology in the space that has led to the growth of more modern corporate houses selling both through physical stores and e-channels. Chennai-based CaratLane is one such successful story.

Co-founder Nitesh Chawla bootstrapped Aunalytics while keeping his academic job at Notre Dame. Here is our conversation from 2021.

Sramana Mitra: Let’s start at the very beginning of your story. Where are you from? Where you born, raised, and in what kind of background?

Nitesh Chawla: I’m from New Delhi although I was born in Calcutta. I did my schooling from Delhi Public School. Then I did my engineering from Pune. Then I came to the United States in 1993 right after finishing my undergrad. I went to grad school in South Florida. I got my PhD in Computer Science with a focus on Machine Learning and Data Science.

Sramana Mitra: How did you find this customer?

Prashant Warier: TB is not one of those things that you can identify on an X-ray. If there is TB, it is likely that the X-ray will show some abnormality, but not every abnormality is likely to be TB. It could be other kinds of disease. Even COVID might look somewhat similar. It’s not precise. The patient comes in and takes an X-ray. If the X-ray is positive, you can do a microbiological test. That is a confirmation.

Sramana Mitra: Let’s start at the very beginning of your journey. Where are you from? Where were you born, and in what kind of background?

Sameer Maggon: I grew up in Delhi. I did my engineering in Computer Science from Pune. Then I came back to my hometown to work for a document management company. Then I decided to learn more. I came to USC in Los Angeles and did my Masters in Computer Science. Since then, I’ve been in LA and worked in a variety of startups and larger companies in the greater Los Angeles area.

Sramana Mitra: How long did it take you to build a product based on this data?

Prashant Warier: We started in 2016 — a lot of the data acquisition happened by mid-2017. In the first year of Qure, I was on the road working on getting more data. As a data scientist, I knew that data was key. You see algorithms built on a hundred images that don’t work. We spent time getting access to a lot of data. 2017 was when we started building our core products.
