The Accelerator Conundrum is a multipart series that challenges the prevailing wisdom of the tech startup ecosystem that entrepreneurs should Blitzscale out of the gate. Written by Sramana Mitra, the Founder and CEO of One Million by One Million (1Mby1M), the world’s first global virtual accelerator, it emphatically argues that a better strategy is to Bootstrap First, Raise Money Later, focus on customers, revenues and profits. 1Mby1M’s mission is to help a Million entrepreneurs reach a million dollars in annual revenue and beyond. Sramana’s Digital Mind AI Mentor virtually mentors entrepreneurs around the world in 57 languages. Mexico City is, without a doubt, the undisputed financial and innovation hub of Latin America. With a startup ecosystem that is home to a massive concentration of talent, capital, and unicorns, its scale and influence are unmatched in the region. The city is a powerhouse in sectors like fintech and e-commerce, and it’s the natural first destination for any global investor looking to enter the Latin American market. However, even a dominant ecosystem like Mexico City has a fundamental flaw: it has bought into the “Blitzscale from the get-go” philosophy. This model, which I’ve thoroughly deconstructed in my The Accelerator Conundrum blog series, is a dangerous game that is actively holding back the ecosystem’s full potential.

Mexico has long been an economic and cultural bridge between North and Latin America, and its startup ecosystem reflects this unique position. Anchored by its powerful domestic market and proximity to the United States, Mexico is a hotbed of innovation, particularly in fintech, e-commerce, and AI. However, for all its potential, the ecosystem is plagued by the same flawed philosophy that is holding back the rest of the region: the “Blitzscale from the get go”model. This is the Accelerator Conundrum in its purest form, and it is a dangerous game for any founder to play.

Rosario is a rising star in Argentina’s startup ecosystem, known for its strategic location as a major port and agricultural hub. The city’s strengths lie in sectors like agribusiness, biotech, and logistics, driven by a strong academic tradition and a collaborative community. This promising ecosystem, however, like its larger peers in Buenos Aires and Córdoba, is still largely beholden to the “Blitzscale from the get-go” philosophy. This is the core of my The Accelerator Conundrum blog series, and it is a particularly dangerous game for Argentine founders to play.

Córdoba, often called “La Docta” (the knowledgeable one), is a major academic hub and a powerhouse of innovation in Argentina. The city has a strong talent pool thanks to its many prestigious universities, making it a natural leader in agritech, deep tech, and software development. Its collaborative ecosystem, supported by academic institutions and a strong local community, has positioned it as a viable, and in some cases superior, alternative to the more competitive environment of Buenos Aires.

Buenos Aires is, without a doubt, the undisputed financial and talent epicenter of Argentina. It is a city in which I have spent many wonderful days walking the streets of Palermo, dancing at Milongas, partying at a Cupola apartment on Avenida de Mayo, listening to music at Torquato Tasso. I also spent a week huddling with the Mercado Libre team at their headquarters in 2007 plotting their next move.

Argentina stands as one of the most intellectually vibrant and talent-rich startup ecosystems in Latin America. With a history of producing tech giants like MercadoLibre, Globant, and Ualá, the country has proven its ability to create globally significant companies. Argentina’s unique strengths lie in a deep pool of skilled software developers, a culture of resilience forged by economic volatility, and a strong foundation in deep tech, fintech, and agritech.
