The old axiom is true: you do indeed have to spend money to make money. Your business will never get off the ground if you can’t get the word out, and you can’t get the word out without money.
Fortunately, that doesn’t mean you have to already be a millionaire in order to market your business. There are plenty of marketing tactics you can consider that will help to grow your business that aren’t especially costly. Some are even free.
Here are some unique, cost-effective ways to market a business when you’re broke: >>>

In Search of a Better to Outsource
Peter Drucker challenged companies to “Do what you do best and outsource the rest!” Unfortunately, too many companies jumped into outsourcing using the same approaches and methods that they used for procuring commodities and materials to run their operations. The result is that far too many outsourcing deals are less than optimal – leaving most in search of a better way to outsource. The University of Tennessee studied some of the world’s most successful outsourcing deals as part of a research project funded by the US Air Force. Our work uncovered the fact that successful outsourcing deals had one thing in common: they played by an unwritten set of rules that is fundamentally different from conventional approaches for procurement. >>>

More than 50 business leaders, technology innovators and thought leaders from academia will share their insights with more than 800 attendees on how CIOs can pilot their organizations toward their goals at the ninth annual MIT Sloan CIO Symposium on May 22, 2012 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This year’s theme is “Piloting the Untethered Enterprise.”
The one-day event will begin at 7:30 am and conclude at 8:30 pm EST at Kresge Auditorium on MIT’s campus in Cambridge, Mass. Those who are interested in attending can register here.
In addition, there is a call for applications for the 2012 MIT Sloan CIO Innovation Showcase. This is gives early stage technology companies an opportunity to connect with CIOs, senior business and IT executives, and venture capitalists. Four of the 2011 Innovation Showcase finalists have received venture funding, and one, Rypple, was acquired by Salesforce.com. CloudSwitch, a 2010 finalist was acquired by Verizon.

During today’s roundtable, we partnered with 3 Day Startup Tel-Aviv to coach entrepreneurs who are getting ready to pitch investors this weekend. The startups are hot off the presses and some have covered impressive ground in a very short time.
Videochef
Menachem Perlman pitched Videochef for team members Omer Lifshitz, Orly Yeruham, Omri Gabai, and Nitzan Yaakobi. The concept is for chefs to teach men how to cook using an online video platform. 1M/1M premium company ifood.tv offers a food channel for recipe videos, which is the closest comparison I know of in this market. However, I believe Videochef is trying to get celebrity chefs to teach classes based on a ‘paid’ model. This assumption needs to be validated at two levels: (a) are chefs willing to teach such interactive video classes, and (b) are consumers willing to pay? Ifood.tv is a free service for consumers and chefs and monetizes via advertizing. They have over 3 million users, and in 2011, the company crossed $1 million in revenue. If Videochef can come up with a validated e-commerce model, ifood.tv may be a strong channel partner for them on a revenue sharing basis.
