Roundtable Recap: August 14 – Be Careful About Funding Assumptions

Today’s roundtable has a couple of very early stage concepts.

Local Etail
First, Dinesh Goel from Mumbai, India, pitched Local Etail, a service for small, local retailers in various Indian geographies to offer e-commerce capabilities, including 4-hour delivery. While I share Dinesh’s enthusiasm for the Indian e-commerce market, and believe that it will become humongous in due course, I also believe it is still very early, and it will continue to be slow growth for a few years. Also, Dinesh’s concept may work better if he fully runs the e-commerce operations – soup to nuts – for these small retailers. Most of them simply do not have the operational expertise to run an e-commerce outfit on their own. Also, given where the market currently is, I have a hard time believing that investors would step into this area anytime soon.
