Posted on Friday, Sep 24th 2010

I know I have a lot of readers from the EDA industry. Once a hotbed of innovation, entrepreneurship, and wealth creation, it is an industry that is now moribund. VCs and angel investors have all but abandoned the industry, and those private companies that exist find it difficult to create lucrative exits, a phenomenon that further turns off investors.

This post, however, is a look at the opportunities that exist within this ecosystem and against this general backdrop. >>>

1Mby1M Incubation Radar 2010: LOGOPremiums

Posted on Friday, Sep 24th 2010

How much of a consumer’s decision to click on a URL is based on domain name? Domain name plays a big part, says Jeff Levine, and is testing his hypothesis through his company LOGOpremiums, a network of B2B e-catalogs that sells promotional items in which each e-catalog website uses a product-specific keyword domain name such as Logoteeshirts.com or Logocups.com. The company manufactures custom logo products and imports and distributes stock logo products. >>>

SM: What is the process for processing a paper claim? Aside from manual data entry, how does it increase cost over digital claims?

Roundtable Recap: September 23 – Do Not Spray And Pray

Posted on Thursday, Sep 23rd 2010

At today’s roundtable, we had three niche e-commerce entrepreneurs and two e-commerce infrastructure entrepreneurs. I will describe their businesses briefly, below. You can vote on which one you like most by clicking on our Facebook page. If you missed the session, please listen to the recording before voting.

First up was Brad Barrett presenting GrillGrate, a grill accessory with which Brad has built a year-to-date revenue of $400,000. We discussed how Brad might be able to do his first $1 million year by leveraging the upcoming holiday season. What is working well for Brad is a combination of television infomercials and e-commerce. Brad has had some success in working with retailers as well, but I advised him to be careful about the cash flow management. To do a solid holiday season, he will need to balance the inventory and marketing budgets, and getting stuck in a complex situation with inventory being stuff in the retail channels with bad terms will be the kiss of death. I will work with him on his inventory financing strategy.
