Georgia’s Startup Accelerator Ecosystem: Why 1Mby1M Is a Game Changer

Accelerators are not just programs. They are levers that can either amplify or diminish the potential of early-founders. In The Accelerator Conundrum, I laid out how founders should evaluate accelerators by asking: What is the cost — equity or fees? What duration and intensity? How accessible (virtual vs physical)? How deep and strategic is the mentorship and curriculum? What network and investor access is delivered? Does the program align with founder goals (bootstrap vs VC)? And importantly — what ongoing support and pre-product, pre-revenue, or even pre-idea help is available?

Georgia (the country, in the Caucasus) has over the past decade shown serious ambition in its startup ecosystem. The government, via its Innovation & Technology Agency (GITA), has invested in regulatory optimization, tax incentives, infrastructure (tech parks, maker spaces), and grants. There are pre-accelerators, youth entrepreneurship programs, regional support, and growing international accelerator presence (e.g. 500 Global in Eurasia, etc.). These are real assets. 

But there remain friction points:

• Early stage founders often need to have an idea or MVP already. Very few programs support moving from curiosity or, say, problem recognition ? validated idea without heavy commitment.
• Physical constraints: many programs are based in Tbilisi or certain regions; rural / remote founders or those with time constraints find participation difficult.
• Cohort- and event-driven support; fixed durations and sometimes rigid schedules.
• Equity or funding expectations sometimes imposed (or implied), or at least fundraising readiness pushed early.
