Building a Startup Is a Marathon Not a Sprint

Posted on Tuesday, Oct 21st 2025
A long desert road symbolizing the marathon journey of building a startup.
Building a startup is a long road — success comes to those who stay the course.

I want to share with you an observation from running the 1Mby1M program since 2008. Almost 700 free mentoring roundtables with over 300k entrepreneurs. Thousands of case studies of successful entrepreneurs – the who’s who of tech startups – through interview based methodology development. Thousands and thousands of premium member coaching sessions.

A lot of entrepreneurs are looking for silver bullets.

They are not necessarily interested in doing the hard work needed to build a sustainable business.

Building a business is a marathon, not a sprint.

We don’t have silver bullets. No one does.

As I often say, 1Mby1M is like a gym membership. Either you use the machines and get in shape, or nothing consequential will happen.

We do well with those entrepreneurs who are willing to put in the work, and are realistic about what the outcome can be.

Nevertheless, we get surly, complaining types who whine and lament that VCs are not ready to write checks for their half-baked, unvalidated ideas.

Entrepreneurship, unfortunately, is NOT for everyone.

Entrepreneurship is REALLY hard.

You are competing with really smart, hard working people who play this game with ferocious ambition.

If this isn’t your cup of tea, it’s okay to get a job.

If you need help with a fundamentals focused startup strategy, join 1Mby1M Premium.

You can get started with Sramana’s Digital Mind AI Mentor right now.

Let’s discuss. What are your challenges? How can we help? Are you willing to put in the work it takes at the 1Mby1M gym to get your startup in shape?
