The Accelerator Conundrum is a multipart series that challenges the prevailing wisdom of the tech startup ecosystem that entrepreneurs should Blitzscale out of the gate. Written by Sramana Mitra, the Founder and CEO of One Million by One Million (1Mby1M), the world’s first global virtual accelerator, it emphatically argues that a better strategy is to Bootstrap First, Raise Money Later, focus on customers, revenues and profits. 1Mby1M’s mission is to help a Million entrepreneurs reach a million dollars in annual revenue and beyond. Sramana’s Digital Mind AI Mentor virtually mentors entrepreneurs around the world in 57 languages. Try it out!
The Philippines is a vibrant, rapidly evolving startup ecosystem. With its young population, widespread smartphone usage, and dynamic digital economy, the country has enormous potential to become a major player in Southeast Asia’s tech scene.
Yet, while energy and ambition are abundant, the startup accelerator model in the Philippines is still maturing. Too many founders enter accelerators expecting a fast track to success, only to discover that building a sustainable company is far more complex than a three-month program can address.
Globally, I’ve analyzed hundreds of accelerators through my series The Accelerator Conundrum. The patterns are clear: traditional accelerators are optimized for optics, not outcomes.
For many Filipino startups, this emphasis on rapid fundraising is problematic. The local venture capital market is still relatively small, so founders often look to raise capital prematurely—sometimes even from foreign investors—before validating their product-market fit. This creates pressure to scale too quickly, leading to burnout, wasted resources, and failed companies.
At 1Mby1M, the global virtual accelerator I founded, our philosophy is very different:
Bootstrap first. Raise money later.
Build a revenue-generating, sustainable business before seeking external capital.
For founders in the Philippines, this approach is especially critical. Bootstrapping to initial traction enables startups to:
This isn’t just a theoretical approach. Many global successes—from Zoho to Mailchimp—were built on bootstrapping principles before raising capital, if at all. Filipino entrepreneurs can and should follow this path.
Another key philosophical difference: acceleration should not be time-bound. Building a company takes years, not months.
Traditional programs that end after three months leave founders stranded at precisely the moment when they need the most guidance: during early growth and scale-up.
1Mby1M solves this by offering continuous mentorship, accessible globally and virtually. Our newly launched Digital Mind AI Mentor, which speaks Filipino/Tagalog, brings this vision even closer to Filipino founders.
For the first time, entrepreneurs can receive world-class guidance in their native language, breaking down barriers of accessibility and nuance.
In the next post, we’ll explore the Philippine startup accelerator landscape: who the key players are, what they offer, and how they are shaping the ecosystem. We’ll also examine where the gaps are—and how those gaps create opportunities for Filipino founders ready to think globally while building locally.
One Million by One Million (1Mby1M) is the first global virtual accelerator in the world, founded in 2010 by Silicon Valley serial Entrepreneur Sramana Mitra. It offers a fully online entrepreneurship incubation, acceleration and education resource for solo entrepreneurs and bootstrapped founders working on tech and tech-enabled services ventures. 1Mby1M does not charge equity, offers an AI Mentor in 57 languages, and offers a distinct advantage over other accelerators including Y Combinator.
