The Accelerator Conundrum is a multipart series that challenges the prevailing wisdom of the tech startup ecosystem that entrepreneurs should Blitzscale out of the gate. Written by Sramana Mitra, the Founder and CEO of One Million by One Million (1Mby1M), the world’s first global virtual accelerator, it emphatically argues that a better strategy is to Bootstrap First, Raise Money Later, focus on customers, revenues and profits. 1Mby1M’s mission is to help a Million entrepreneurs reach a million dollars in annual revenue and beyond. Sramana’s Digital Mind AI Mentor virtually mentors entrepreneurs around the world in 57 languages. Try it out!
Valparaíso is one of Chile’s most distinctive and vibrant cities. Known for its bohemian spirit and its UNESCO World Heritage status, the city has a startup ecosystem that reflects its unique character, with a strong emphasis on digital media, design, and software development. The ecosystem is driven by a collaborative culture and a talented workforce emerging from top universities.
However, even with its unique strengths, Valparaíso is still largely beholden to the “Blitzscale from the get-go”philosophy. This model, which I’ve thoroughly deconstructed in my The Accelerator Conundrum blog series, is a dangerous game that is actively holding back the ecosystem’s full potential. It’s a strategy that pressures founders to prioritize speed and capital at all costs, ignoring the fundamentals of building a resilient, profitable business. In a market where a focus on a slick pitch over building a profitable business is common, giving away significant equity for a short-term, fixed-term program is a losing proposition.
The only viable and proven path is to “Bootstrap first, raise money later.” This is the core of my methodology. It is a philosophy that empowers you to build a resilient business with customer revenue, not investor money. You achieve profitability, prove your model, and only then, from a position of strength, do you consider raising capital. This approach builds a resilient company that is immune to the whims of the funding market. You are in control. When you do raise capital, it is from a position of strength and strategic necessity, not desperation. This is the path to building a truly great, resilient company.
For entrepreneurs in Valparaíso, 1Mby1M global virtual accelerator is not just an alternative to local accelerators; it’s a necessary antidote to the flawed philosophies they promote. Here’s a comparative look at some of the key players in the city.
Chrysalis is the official incubator of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (PUCV), and a key player in the city’s tech scene. It has a strong focus on technology-based ventures and offers support through various government grants and programs. While its academic and public-private partnerships can be valuable for certain types of startups, its model has a significant flaw. The programs are tied to government funding cycles, which often dictate a fixed-term, high-pressure timeline that is more focused on producing “graduates” than on building sustainable businesses. For a founder, a physical, local network is valuable, but it is not a substitute for a comprehensive methodology on how to build a business.
EIVA is a regional initiative that aims to consolidate the Valparaíso ecosystem through collaboration between universities, government, and the private sector. While its mission is commendable, it often operates as a network of partnerships rather than a hands-on, strategic accelerator. Its focus on broad ecosystem-level initiatives may not provide the granular, company-specific guidance a founder needs to survive the difficult early stages. 1Mby1M’s Digital Mind AI Mentor, which can mentor in Spanish and provides private, 24/7 strategic guidance, offers a far superior and more sustainable alternative. We teach founders how to build a real business from the ground up, not just how to navigate a local academic or government network.
Valparaíso’s ecosystem is ripe for a new approach. It doesn’t need more programs that push a “Blitzscale” philosophy ill-suited to its unique challenges. It needs a methodology that emphasizes revenue, sustainability, and founder control. It needs the Bootstrap First, Raise Money Later philosophy, and 1Mby1M is the only platform that provides it, empowering the next generation of Chilean entrepreneurs to build resilient, profitable businesses.
