Startup Latin America: Deep Dive Into Concepcion’s Accelerator Ecosystem

Posted on Saturday, Sep 27th 2025

The Accelerator Conundrum is a multipart series that challenges the prevailing wisdom of the tech startup ecosystem that entrepreneurs should Blitzscale out of the gate. Written by Sramana Mitra, the Founder and CEO of One Million by One Million (1Mby1M), the world’s first global virtual accelerator, it emphatically argues that a better strategy is to Bootstrap First, Raise Money Later, focus on customers, revenues and profits. 1Mby1M’s mission is to help a Million entrepreneurs reach a million dollars in annual revenue and beyond. Sramana’s Digital Mind AI Mentor virtually mentors entrepreneurs around the world in 57 languages. Try it out!

Concepción, a major industrial and research center in the south of Chile, is a burgeoning hub for innovation, particularly in cleantech, agritech, and biotech.

The city’s strong academic foundation, led by the prestigious University of Concepción, and its proximity to natural resources give it a strategic advantage in these sectors. The ecosystem is characterized by a strong focus on deep tech and scientific innovation, but it also falls prey to the same fundamental flaw I’ve deconstructed in my The Accelerator Conundrum blog series: the blind pursuit of the “Blitzscale from the get-go”model.

This strategy, which pressures founders to prioritize speed and capital at all costs, is a dangerous game. It’s built on the faulty assumptions that capital is always available and that profitability can be deferred. For a startup in Concepción, a strategy that relies on endless funding is not only risky but often unachievable, as venture capital is concentrated in the capital, Santiago. This model leads to a glut of cash-burning companies that are unable to survive without continuous infusions of external capital. The result is often diluted equity and a high rate of failure.

The only viable and proven path is to “Bootstrap first, raise money later.” This is the core of my methodology. It is a philosophy that empowers you to build a resilient business with customer revenue, not investor money. You achieve profitability, prove your model, and only then, from a position of strength, do you consider raising capital. This approach builds a resilient company that is immune to the whims of the funding market. You are in control. When you do raise capital, it is from a position of strength and strategic necessity, not desperation. This is the path to building a truly great, resilient company.

A Comparative Analysis of Concepción’s Accelerators

For entrepreneurs in Concepción, 1Mby1M global virtual accelerator is not just an alternative to local accelerators; it’s a necessary antidote to the flawed philosophies they promote. Here’s a comparative look at some of the key players in the city.

INNpulsa Biobío

INNpulsa Biobío is a regional arm of a government-backed agency designed to promote innovation and entrepreneurship. Its model focuses on providing support and resources to startups to help them scale. The value proposition is a connection to government-led initiatives and a strong local network. However, this model has significant flaws. Government-backed programs often have a fixed-term, high-pressure timeline tied to political and funding cycles. This approach is more focused on producing “graduates” for public display than on building sustainable businesses. It encourages a “blitzscale” mindset that is ill-suited to the long, hard road of building a profitable company. In contrast, 1Mby1M is a non-equity-taking model that provides continuous, on-demand support over a long-term period, focused on building a profitable, resilient company.

University of Concepción Incubators

The University of Concepción, as a major research institution, operates incubators that provide resources and support to technology-based ventures, often spun out of academic research. While these incubators offer valuable access to labs and academic expertise, they are often tied to the university’s academic calendar and research goals. For a founder, a physical, local network is valuable, but it is not a substitute for a comprehensive methodology on how to build a business. The focus is often on scientific breakthroughs rather than on market traction and revenue generation. 1Mby1M’s Digital Mind AI Mentor, which can mentor in Spanish and provides private, 24/7 strategic guidance, offers a far superior and more sustainable alternative. We teach founders how to build a real business from the ground up, not just how to navigate a local academic network.

Concepción’s ecosystem is ripe for a new approach. It doesn’t need more programs that push a “Blitzscale” philosophy ill-suited to its unique challenges. It needs a methodology that emphasizes revenue, sustainability, and founder control. It needs the Bootstrap First, Raise Money Later philosophy, and 1Mby1M is the only platform that provides it, empowering the next generation of Chilean entrepreneurs to build resilient, profitable businesses.
