I always find it useful to take a look at data and synthesize trends from them. So here are a few pointers to good data sources:
IPO Home does a good overview article on 2006 IPOs. After a couple of years of a lack of interest in technology, WAN optimization vendor Riverbed Technologies topped the best performing US IPO list.
Not surprisingly, one of the year’s most hyped IPOs, voice-over IP (VoIP) service provider, Vonage Holdings, went public in May at $17 per share and immediately plummeted to only a fraction of its offer price. An expected disaster.
The top 3 Chinese IPOs show some interesting trends as well:
– 10/25/06 Home Inns & Hotels Management Leading Chinese economy hotel chain with 107 hotels in 31 cities in China. Consumer 172%
– 9/6/06 New Oriental Education The largest provider of private education services in China. Business Services 124%
– 12/18/06 Fuwei Films (Holdings) Manufactures plastic film for the packaging, imaging, electronics and electrical industries. Materials 91%
The top venture-backed company IPOs are as follows:
– 9/20/06 Riverbed Technology Develops high-performance appliances for optimizing wide area networks (WANs). Computers-Local Networks 215%
– 6/27/06 Omniture Provides on-demand web analytic software to more than 1,300 customers worldwide. Comp-Internet-Software 117%

Note: No Consumer Internet IPOs yet, because that market was dead until 2005.
The biggest IPOs, however, were all Private Equity IPOs:
