Roundtable Recap: May 8 – Discussion On UltraLight Startups

During this week’s roundtable, we had three strategy discussions, as well as a general discussion on the ultra-light startups trend.

Before we started the slide presentation, Pinky Thakkar called in to get some input on her brand strategy vis-à-vis product naming. She has several products that have received coverage as well as awards. However, she wants to rename these products to maximize SEO results, and wanted to know how to handle the rebranding issue.

During the presentations, first Robert Styler from Ashland, Oregon, pitched CREW, a network marketing concept whereby members pay a monthly membership fee to participate in getting credits to buy goods and services from the community that have social value. The discussion was largely about financing strategy, and Robert presented some of his options that, in my view, had onerous terms. I cautioned him against selling too much equity too soon for small amounts of funding.
