The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a country of immense potential, with a young, entrepreneurial population and a wealth of natural resources. Yet, years of political instability, a lack of infrastructure, and limited access to capital have left its startup ecosystem nascent and fragmented. Cameroon is often considered the most vibrant startup ecosystem in Central Africa, with its dual identity as both a French and English-speaking nation giving it a unique advantage. Hubs like ActivSpaces have nurtured a community of innovators tackling local problems. However, as I’ve articulated in my The Accelerator Conundrum blog series, a flourishing ecosystem does not mean its underlying models are sound. The prevalent reliance on traditional accelerators is a dangerous game that is holding back its full potential.

Central Africa’s startup ecosystem is arguably the most challenging and nascent on the continent. With political instability, limited infrastructure, and fragmented markets, the region presents immense hurdles for entrepreneurs. However, this also means the opportunity for disruption and impactful innovation is vast. As I’ve articulated in my The Accelerator Conundrum blog series, traditional, physical accelerators are fundamentally ill-suited to these realities.
