World Cup Diary: Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina

Posted on Sunday, Jun 27th 2010

Wow, Argentina completely outclassed Mexico today, and Germany did the same with England!

The quarterfinal match coming up brings back memories of one of my favorite games ever: the 1986 Mexico World Cup final, which Argentina won 3–2. José Brown and Jorge Valdano scored in the first half to put Argentina up 2–0. West Germany then staged a fantastic comeback. Rummenigge scored in the 74th minute, and six minutes later Rudi Völler buried the equalizer. With seven minutes remaining, a pass from Maradona gave Jorge Burruchaga the winner for Argentina.

PS: They really need to get going with some video replay technology. Both games saw some rather embarrassing refereeing.

World Cup Diary: New Trade Prospects

Posted on Saturday, Jun 26th 2010

Great first day of knockout stage soccer. Both Uruguay vs. South Korea and the USA vs. Ghana have been fantastic games. For the United States, well, Donovan sums it up: “Soccer is a cruel game, sometimes!”

It’s interesting to see the round of 16 lineup: six Latin American teams (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, and Mexico), six European teams (Germany, Netherlands, Slovakia, Spain, Portugal, and England), two from Asia (Japan and South Korea), one from Africa (Ghana) and the USA. >>>
