Startup Ideas for the Post Covid World: Restaurants Delivering Prepared Food as a Subscription

Posted on Monday, Aug 3rd 2020

One of the repeated complaints I have heard from my social network during quarantine is that people are dying to go to restaurants. They are bored with home-cooked food.

Food, of course, is not the only reason why people go to restaurants.

The Economist has a great article titled, Why do people go to restaurants?

Startup Ideas for the Post Covid World: Facilitating Travel Experiences

Posted on Monday, Jul 27th 2020

There are two major trends that the world will need to take in stride in the Covid era: air travel will become expensive and people will be working remotely.

The key driver of ticket pricing in the airline industry is business travelers. They pay for expensive tickets, which subsidize the budget travelers.

In the Covid era, business travel has plummeted. Airlines are struggling to stay afloat. Those that survive will likely see fewer business travelers and will have to raise their ticket prices.

Startup Ideas for the Post Covid World: Distributing the Workforce

Posted on Wednesday, Jul 22nd 2020

One of the unambiguous trends of the Covid era is the success of work-from-home for certain industry sectors such as Tech, Finance, Legal, Consulting, etc.

Recode reported in May

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a livestream on his personal page on Thursday that he guesses as much as 50 percent of the company’s 45,000-person workforce could be working entirely remotely in the next five to 10 years. While Zuckerberg cautioned that the number is not necessarily a target, it’s a tangible estimate by the leader of one of the most important companies in the world about the future of work, impacting not only his company but the norms for post-pandemic office workers as a whole. The move comes shortly after Facebook’s rival Twitter announced it will allow its entire workforce to permanently work remotely, along with other tech companies like Shopify and Coinbase.

Since then, the trend has gained further momentum.

Posted on Wednesday, Jul 15th 2020

In the Spring of 2020, parents of young children have suddenly woken up to a world where kids have to be homeschooled. They are supposedly guided by the teachers. They are scrambling to make things flow without losing the limited attention of the youngsters that are already difficult to command in normal times.

The key issue I observe is that the teaching tools are not designed for this usage model.

Posted on Wednesday, Jul 8th 2020

Certain sectors of industry are facing extraordinary levels of job loss in the post-Covid era. While some of these jobs may come back, it is widely believed that some trends are permanent. The retail sector faces one of the greatest shifts: the move to online shopping seems irreversible. Retail stores and malls are rapidly closing down. Service sector jobs in retail and hospitality face a grim future.

There is, however, a solution.

Service sector employees can be retrained as healthcare professionals.

Startup Ideas for the Post Covid World: Meaningful Friendships Through Literature and Film

Posted on Tuesday, Jun 30th 2020

In December 2017, I wrote a piece called Let’s Go Beyond Superficial Virtual Interactions in 2018 encouraging my readers to look for opportunities to interact more in person through meaningful activities. I shared my own experience with our literary group Caravanserai Literati.

At the end of 2019, I published our Literati Reading List as my readers wanted to know what we were reading.

Well, little did I know that the Literati, to self-preserve, would have to go virtual and operate through a video conferencing platform in the wake of the Covid menace!

Sunset Clouds, Miniature | Sramana Mitra, 2013

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed consumer behavior in a major way. The change, however, has only started. As we move through the virus-era over the next two years without treatment and without vaccines, much more will likely change.

As you know, I have a special interest in Art, and have observed its dynamics for many years. I have concluded that the time has come for Artists and Collectors to move online and interact in a fluid marketplace.

Let me explain.
