Sramana Mitra: Let’s start at the very beginning of your journey. Where are you from? Where were you born, raised, and in what kind of background?

Senraj Soundar: I was born and brought up in India, particularly in Southern India. I got my Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering in Chennai. Around that time when I graduated, I received an award from the President of India for the best invention in the country. It was called the National Technology Award. They give out one award each year. I won that award in 1991, and it was given in 1992. The following year, I came to the US and went to UMass to get my Computer Science degree.

Sramana Mitra: Let’s start at the very beginning of your journey. Where are you from? Where were you born, raised, and in what kind of background?

Luke Norris: I was born in Nevada. 

Sramana Mitra: What’s your background vis-a-vis education?

Luke Norris: I’m a high school graduate. I was lucky to go to private school from K through 12. I was able to graduate rather early in high school.

You may have been reading our PaaS coverage, as well as Bootstrapping by Piggybacking posts. Well, 123FormBuilder CEO Florin Cornianu has built a $6 million SaaS business using this methodology with just $1 million in funding. What’s more, he has done it entirely from Romania and sells to largely a US customer base. Excellent story!

Sramana Mitra: Let’s start at the very beginning of your journey. Where are you from? Where were you born, raised, and in what kind of background?

Florin Cornianu: I’m the CEO and Co-founder of 123FormBuilder. We are a form-building SaaS. The company is in Romania. I was born in a small city in the northern part of Romania. I’m an engineer by profession. I graduated with computer science degree from a large university in the city where I live.

Sramana Mitra: You said it took you two years to get to $60,000 annual revenue. That’s 2010 then, right?

Florin Cornianu: It took us all the way to 2014 to get to a million dollars in revenue.

Sramana Mitra: What was the product that you got together?

Florin Cornianu: It was a very small script that allowed you to build a contact form and put it on your website. Back then, there wasn’t any Google Forms.

We thought about automating the creation of contact forms. It turned out to be a product. Instead of selling the script, we decided to sell it as a subscription. We did it on a freemium model.

What is the best bootstrapping tactic for B-to-B startups? Solve an acute customer pain. Get paid an advance to do so. Leeyo Software CEO Jagan Reddy followed this strategy to bootstrap to $20 million. He built a niche software that solved a very specific problem and started selling it to enterprises for a lot of money. This story is a textbook case study of how well you can scale with no outside financing if you can identify a burning pain point in customers who are willing to pay a LOT to solve that pain.

Jagan Reddy: I was born in India. All my schooling was done in India.
