Numerous developers around the world are turning into successful entrepreneurs. NLP Cloud Founder CTO Julien Salinas provides a textbook case study of a brilliant journey that is a highly repeatable blueprint to follow.

Sramana Mitra: Let’s start at the very beginning of your journey. Where are you from? Where were you born, raised, and in what kind of background?

Julien Salinas: I’m French. I live in France. I’m not located in the French Alps. I have a double degree in both business and engineering, especially computer science. I graduated 15 years ago. I initially started working as a consultant and doing product marketing. I was not very happy in my job.

I started coding in my personal time until I realized that maybe it was time to start a real career in programming. That’s what I did. Since then, things have been much easier for me. I did my first startup. Then a second one which is working very well.

When we spoke with Founder Mark Lancaster in 2014, very few technology companies had been built from the UK. ARM and Autonomy come to mind. Here’s the story of a company called SDL.

Sramana: Mark, let’s start with the beginning of your personal story. Where are you from? What is the backstory of the SDL story?

Mark Lancaster: I was born and raised in the UK. I studied engineering and computer science at the university. I started my career as a software design engineer at Satchwell Control Systems and Lotus Development Company. From Solo Developer to Venture Scale Entrepreneur: Jordan Boesch, CEO of 7shifts (Part 5)

Posted on Sunday, Jul 10th 2022

Sramana Mitra: Did you just do more of the same for the next few years?

Jordan Boesch: Yes. There were some interesting moments. We hit about 30 people. You start to feel these inflection points where things start to get rocky. It’s a lack of process for things. As a startup, you thrive off of not having processes.

As we grew, I could feel that starting to happen at 30 people. We brought in a consultant to help us in putting in some lightweight frameworks to help guide the business. That was helpful for us. When we hit 50 people, we had almost a full-time facilitator that was part of our team that was doing planning with us and helping with some lightweight frameworks.
