Digital Projection: Minus the last bit of Analog

Posted on Wednesday, Aug 10th 2005

Collinear is a little company that is working on Solid State Illumination for Front and Rear Projection Systems. Led by a veteran CEO with extensive background in Consumer Electronics, the company is working on a very hard problem:

“Utilizing semiconductor lasers and non-linear optics, the Company’s illumination module replaces the last remaining analog components of projection systems and will enable consumer electronics manufacturers to offer fully digital projection products. The introduction of solid state illumination solutions to replace existing lamp technology and complex optics is essential to meet the objectives of system manufacturers who are seeking performance enhancement coupled with lower system cost. The Collinear illuminator will address the shortcomings of existing light sources by offering superior lifetime, increased efficiency, digital modulation and improved color rendition while also enabling a reduction in total system cost and complexity.”

Background of the CEO is quite compelling. Elliot Broadwin is the founder and former CEO of OpenTV (OPTV), provider of interactive television software and applications. His next venture was as CEO of S-VISION, a silicon imaging technology startup. Elliot has also held positions as General Manager of Thomson Consumer Electronics High End Color Television business unit marketing the RCA, GE and ProScan brands.

The current investors are Tallwood and Allegis. The company is currently under tight wraps, but one to watch.
